At birth, a seal pup measure about a metre long and weigh about 24 kg. They are born on the ice floe between mid-March and early April with a layer of well-developed fat. Their fur is then grey blue with a pale cream color on the belly. They will lose it at a moult at about fourteen months of age. The breastfeeding period lasts only four days, during which the size of the small doubles. It is possible thanks to the very high fat content.
